Healthy Eyes & Clean Beauty

You probably already know that late nights and too much screen time can irritate your eyes, but did you know ingredients in common skincare products and makeup can do the same? Cosmetics on the skin and around the eyes are used often by some, but almost everyone uses facial skincare products every day in the form of cleanser, moisturizer, anti-aging products, and sunscreen.

We know it is important to be aware of the ingredients in these products and how they can affect your eyes.

TOXIC CHEMICALS & DRY EYES

FAD Main

Ingredients mean everything when it comes to the high maintenance needs of the eyes.

U.S. researchers report that one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients used in personal care products are

industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors.

Many eye cosmetic products include plasticizers (chemicals that keep concrete soft), degreasers (used to get grime off auto parts), and surfactants (they reduce surface tension in water, like in paint and inks). Imagine what that does to your eyes, your skin, and to the environment.

If you suffer from dry eye, there are some common chemicals you should stay away from as they will exacerbate your symptoms.

BEAUTY PRODUCTS, YOUR EYES & TOXICITY

Ever look at a list of ingredients on a beauty product and wonder if it’s safe to put on your face or near your eyes?

Words like “hypoallergenic”, “ophthalmologist or dermatologist tested,” “natural,” “organic,” “gentle for sensitive eyes,” and “clinically proven” are not regulated by the FDA and are thus essentially meaningless buzzwords.

Cosmetics may act as neurotoxins, carcinogens, mutagens, and endocrine disruptors

Cosmetics may increase eye irritation, blepharitis, meibomian gland dysfunction, corneal epithelial cell toxicity and may cause or exacerbate dry eye disease.

WHAT CAN DO YOU TO PROTECT YOURSELF?

BE INFORMED & AWARE

Be aware, read labels &

avoid these ingredients to help protect your eyes and overall vision. If your products contain

any of the substances cited here, you should consider discontinuing their use and try to find other products that do not include these ingredients.

DO YOUR RESEARCH

Good sources include the Environmental Working Group and Think Dirty. Both companies have researched and published lists of

products with safe ingredients. Both also have apps available for iOS and Android phones and devices.

AVOID EXPIRED PRODUCTS

97% of women report having used or currently use expired makeup. Do note the day packages are opened and what date they should be thrown out in order to prevent irritation from broken down products or risk of infection from microbial growth.

TALK TO US

If you are experiencing any eye irritation or dry eye symptoms, call us and talk to the doctor. In addition to removing these chemicals from your personal care regimen, the doctor may recommend a procedure to help alleviate your symptoms.

The Magic of Hypochlorous Acid (HOCL) Solutions

Hypochlorous acid has shown high efficacy against a wide range of microorganisms, helping to fight infection, reduce inflammation, control the body’s response to injury, and enhance its natural ability to heal.

Hypo Acid 900x
What is it?

HOCl is a natural part of our internal defense system and is produced by our white blood cells, but it can also be synthesized and applied to our external environment like our skin.

How does it work?

HOCl has antimicrobial properties that inactivates pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, spores, and fungi but is also gentle enough to be used on the eyes.

Uses

It is particularly helpful, in the following cases:

dry eyes, blepharitis, eye allergies, styes, dermatitis, and rosacea.

Where do I get it?

Not all HOCL products are the same. Four factors are important when differentiating HOCl solutions: purity, preservation, pH and prescription. Schedule an appointment to discuss which options are best for your eyes.
